The Forest

Nottingham Forest and the Rock Cemetery have been combined on this page as they can both be easily visited by taking a single tram journey and alighting at the Forest stop - just 16 minutes from Moor bridge.

Or by car, and using the Free Park and Ride facility on the Forest at Gregory Boulevard.

The Forest, once home to Nottinghams horseracing course, is now a large open space almost in the City Centre. It has pleasant walks, football pitches, play areas, bowls greens and a cafe in summer periods. It is also the location for the annual world famous Goose Fair every October.

The adjacent Rock Cemetery, although not an immediately obvious place for a pleasure journey,  is well worth a visit - and there are occasional conducted walking tours advertised in the local press

The cemetery is beautifully maintained and contains a vast array of memorials and monuments  - many of them real examples of the stonemasons' craft in years gone by. One can very easily eat up a couple of hours walking round this area!

The public gallows stood at the Mansfield Road/Forest Road entrance to the cemetery until the date of the last public execution in 1827, though no trace of these remain
