Market
Square - in
the very centre of the City - was demolished in 2005, to make way for a new, more
open, square which opened in 2007.
The reported cost of the project was in excess of
£7,000,000. The subject of much debate as to whether there has been any
improvement - and whether the £7m has been well spent. The Square is
claimed to be the largest open City square in the UK and visitors will be
walking on part of China, the granite slabs having been imported from that
country.
Trams from Moor Bridge pass through the new square, thus
providing very quick and easy access from Rise Park right into the City centre in less than half
an hour.
The Old Market Square and the new square are shown in this small selection
of photographs:-
