River Leen & Bulwell

Home
The River Leen is a pleasant stretch of a small river that  is within a few minutes walking distance of Rise Park. The river rises near Kirkby in Ashfield and passes through Mill Lakes and Moor Bridge Nature Reserve, then meanders past Morrisons supermarket and through Bulwell Town Centre on its way to the River Trent.

Perhaps the most attractive, but certainly most popular, spot is the area known (most inappropriately) as Bulwell Bogs !
This section has riverside seating, a childrens playground and paddling pool and public house serving food. There is a very pleasant walk available by following paths along either side of the river from Bulwell Bogs to Cinderhill and beyond. Parking free in the Tram Station.

Visitors by car can also use the free car parks adjacent to Morrisons / Matalan / Focus,  for immediate access to the well maintained river banks for a  very pleasant, level, short walk from this point.

Bulwell, not the most inspiring of market towns, is just a few minutes car or bus ride from Rise Park. It does, nevertheless, have a reasonable range of small shops, basic public houses, chip shop and takeaways and a butcher. There is also an open air market several days per week.

There are no nightclubs or high class restaurants or eateries, but it is believed that Weatherspoons intend to open premises in the town at some time in the near future, and the town does have a couple of betting shops and two snooker clubs. The largest shops in the town are Wilkinsons Hardware, an Argos store and Woolworths. The outskirts of Bulwell, on the Rise Park side, do however have the Morrisons store, Matalan and Wickes DIY. Also the Ken Martin Leisure Centre and swimming pool featured on separate page.

Parts of the town unfortunately suffer from an air of dereliction due to the continuing lack of maintenance or development of premises long since vacated by the Vauxhall car dealers (on the main street), and a large, closed down supermarket in the centre - together with a substantial space previously available as a car park but now firmly barricaded off  following invasions by 'travellers'. Both of these premises now empty for several years and a real blot on the townscape, it has to be said. (Feb 2008)

Bulwell - behind the scenes - It is when one looks beyond and behind the main street that one finds scenes of real neglect, a large part of the area being nothing more than a huge and growing rubbish dump, where it is quite clear that nothing has been done by the Local Authority, the River Authority (or whoever is responsible) for some years.

This is the area behind the old Kwik Save, the existing Argos store and the stretch of the River Leen from the town centre, past Bulwell Bogs and out towards Cinderhill. An absolute disgrace to the district

The River Leen has become a favourite spot for the dumping of shopping trolleys, three piece suites and other assorted rubbish - as have the car parking areas and Spring Lane alongside the tram and railway tracks.

Not just a matter of opinion - the photographs below were all taken on a single short walk round the area over a 40 minute period in February 2008.
Surely a case where the camera cannot be lying. Can anyone deny that this does nothing for the image of the town or the area in general?
Yet the Council deems it fit  to install signs warning dog owners to "Pick it up or face prosecution". One rule for them and another for..................??
