Woodthorpe
Grange Park
is
an easy three mile journey by car, with main entrance and car park on Woodthorpe
Drive.
It is also within easy reach by bus (No.89) from the Rise Park bus terminus,
alighting at Mansfield Road Sherwood and taking a very short walk up and
over the hill to the Mansfield Road entrance
This park was originally a private
estate, acquired by the City Council and opened as a public park in the 1920's.
At time of writing
(Jan
2008)
this is one of the better maintained City Council parks in our area.
The
park contains a pitch and putt golf course, ornamental gardens, water
cascade (unfortunately more often out of action than
working),
a small memorial
garden, play area, some woodland and an 'outdoor theatre stage'.
The
heated tropical
plant house, with fish pond, should not be missed - opening times vary
and displayed near the entrance
The Grange is a Grade II listed building, though it is presently occupied
as Parks Department Council offices.
The
park is also home to the main Council Plant Nurseries, where bedding plants are grown
for decoration of the City's roundabouts and parks.
